How to Apply

Grants are made twice a year. The deadlines for applications are 1st June and 1st November. All applicants, whether successful or not, are contacted.

Grants are usually between £1,000 and £10,000, with the majority being £5,000 or less. Exceptionally, grants of up to £20,000 are made, but these are usually for medical research projects.

Grants are usually awarded for one year only.

What to Send

We need to have the following information to decide whether a project can be considered for a grant (there is no application form):

An A4 summary of the project.

Any necessary supporting information. Please keep to a minimum, we will contact you if any more information is required.

A detailed budget for the project.

The most recent accounts and Annual Report.

Please send all this information to the address listed on the Contact Addresses page.

Applications need to be submitted only during the appropriate year (see General Information for exact details of this), in time for the 1 June and 1 November deadlines.  Applications received after 1 June may be considered for the 1 November meeting.  Applications received after 1 November will not be considered.

The strongest projects are considered at Trustees’ Meetings in late June and late November.  For the next meeting in June 2008, only projects concerned with Music and the Arts, and Overseas, will be considered. Community and Disability projects will first be considered in June 2009.

Please note that, for 2010, only Medical Research projects dealing with the ageing population will be considered.  The other priorities - Children, Youth and the Elderly - as well as other non-research based medical work are still welcome.

Acceptability of Projects

Grants are not made to individuals, or any students, including individuals embarking on a trip overseas with an umbrella charitable organisation.

Overseas projects are supported only in the stated years.  The next opportunity is 2008.  This applies to charities based both in the UK and overseas.

Charities working in the following areas are not supported: Religion (including repair of Church fabric), Animals (welfare and conservation).

National projects are preferred to those with a local remit.

Monitoring

Selected charities will be asked to report on how the grant was spent to ensure the Trust's resources are used effectively.

Successful applications

We appreciate that charities like to know the outcome of an application as quickly as possible after the Trustees’ Meetings.  Due to the increasing number of applications received, the process of contacting both successful and unsuccessful charities is taking several weeks.

Therefore, the Trust will now publish a list of successful applicants on the Recent Awards after each Trustees Meeting.  Any charity not listed here has not been successful with a grant.

We cannot reply individually to emails enquiring about whether or not an application has been successful.

All applicants will still be contacted by letter.
