• How to Apply •

Grants are made twice a year. The deadlines for applications are 1st June and 1st November. All applicants, whether successful or not, are contacted.

The ratio of applications to grants is approximately 1 in 20.  In order to give as many grants as possible, we have decided to limit grants to £3,000 and £1,000.

PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST ANY HIGHER AMOUNTS.

The ONLY exception is Medical Research, where grants can be £10,000.

Grants are awarded for ONE YEAR ONLY.

Grants are not awarded to charities on consecutive years, even for different projects.

What to Send

We are concerned at the excessive amount of material now provided by applicants.  This represents a significant waste of limited resources.  We are therefore clarifying the guidelines for applications (there is no standard application form).

To apply for a grant, please submit ONLY the following:

•

A letter summarising the application, including acknowledgement of any previous grants awarded from the Trust;

•

A maximum of 2 sides of A4 (including photographs) summarising the project (including photographs);

•

A detailed budget for the project.

•

A maximum of 2 sides of A4 (including photographs) summarising the charity's general activities;

•

The most recent Accounts and Annual Report.

Please do NOT send CDs, DVDs, or any other additional information.  If we require further details, we will contact the charity directly.  Charities are therefore advised to send in applications with sufficient time before the June or November deadlines to allow for such enquiries.

We welcome applications that follow these guidelines and respect our wish to reduce waste.

Please send all this information to the address listed on the Contact Addresses page. Please do not send applications by either signed-for delivery or courier - the PO Box address does not function satisfactorily for either of these.  To avoid any postal delays, please ensure applications are sent in plenty of time.

Applications need to be submitted only during the appropriate year (see General Information for exact details of this), in time for the 1 June and 1 November deadlines.  Applications received after 1 June may be considered for the 1 November meeting. Applications received after 1 November will not be considered.

Charities that apply in June cannot apply in November of the same year, whether or not they are successful."

The strongest projects are considered at Trustees' Meetings in late June and late November.  Music and the Arts and Overseas projects will first be considered in June 2011.

Please note that, for 2013, only Medical Research projects dealing with Cancer will be considered. Other non-research based medical work are still welcome.

Acceptability of Projects

Grants are not made to individuals, or any students, including individuals embarking on a trip overseas with an umbrella charitable organisation.

Overseas projects will not be supported after 2011

The following are not supported:

  • Charities involved with Religion (including repair of Church fabric),
  • Charities involved with Animals (welfare and conservation)
  • Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies
  • Village Halls
  • Individual hospices (national organisations can apply)
  • Capital appeals
  • Schools
  • Individuals
  • Minibuses
  • Sea Cadets

National projects are preferred to those with a local remit.

Monitoring

Selected charities will be asked to report on how the grant was spent to ensure the Trust's resources are used effectively.

Successful applications

We appreciate that charities like to know the outcome of an application as quickly as possible after the Trustees’ Meetings.  Due to the increasing number of applications received, the process of contacting both successful and unsuccessful charities is taking several weeks.

Therefore, the Trust will now publish a list of successful applicants on the Recent Awards after each Trustees Meeting.  Any charity not listed here has not been successful with a grant.

We cannot reply individually to emails enquiring about whether or not an application has been successful.

All applicants will still be contacted by letter.
