FAQs

Eligibility

We are a not-for-profit organisation but are not a registered charity - can we apply?

No.  The Trust gives grants ONLY to registered charities, and does not give grants to not-for-profit organisations.

We are a local charity - can we apply for a grant?

You can apply for a grant.  However, grants are very rarely awarded to local charities that are not known by any of the Trustees.

We are a national charity that works in various parts of the country - can we apply for a grant for a particular project with a local remit?

Yes, you can apply for a particular local project.

We are a local branch of a national charity - can we apply for a grant?

We prefer to give grants to a charity's headquarters.  However, if you have a separate charity number, we will consider an application.  Please note, however, that when we receive applications from different branches of the same charity, it is often very difficult to chose one rather than another.

I am an individual who will be working for a charity - can I receive a grant?

No grants are awarded to individuals in any circumstances.

We are only a small charity - can we apply for a grant?

We do not have a limit on how small or how large a charity can be in order to be considered.  However, please note that small charities with only a local remit are very unlikely to receive a grant.

We are a charity registered overseas - can we apply for a grant?

No, you must have a UK charity number and address.

We are a UK-registered charity that carries out work overseas - can we apply for a grant?

Yes, you can apply for a grant if you have a UK address and are a UK-registered charity, but ONLY in the stated years - see General Information.

We are a church that needs to improve its facilities so that community groups can continue to use our building - can we apply for a grant?

No.  Grants are not awarded to churches, even when they are used by community groups.

Can we apply for a capital grant?

No.  Capital projects are not funded.  This includes churches (see above), schools, hospitals, hospices, museums, galleries and theatres.

We have had a grant from the Trust before - can we apply again?

Yes, but please state when you received a grant, and how much the grant was.  Please only apply in the appropriate year - see General Information.

We applied to the Trust before but were unsuccessful - can we apply again?

You cannot apply again in the same year, so if you have been unsuccessful in June, you cannot reapply in November.  However, you can re-apply another year, as long as your work fits into the appropriate category. Please state when you have previously applied.

We are a community group working with people with disabilities - which category should we apply under?

The categories of Community and Disability are deliberately broad.  As long as your work falls into one or the other, you can submit an application in the appropriate year.

We are a community group working with children - which year should we apply?

You can apply either under Community or Children.  Sometimes you may receive a letter suggesting you re-apply in another year - this happens if we have had a particularly large number of applications in one category.

We are a theatre group working with disabled children - which year should we apply?

You can apply any year, but we encourage any art or theatre based charities to apply under the category of Music and the Arts, even if they work with children or the elderly, for example.

We are a charity working with children overseas - which year should we apply?

Overseas charities can ONLY apply in the stated years, irrespective of the work they do.

Applications

Do you have an application form?

No.  See 'How to Apply' for full details of what to include in an application.

Can I speak to someone about our application?

No.  The Trust employs only one part-time administrator.  All their time is taken up replying to applications.

Can I email questions before I submit an application?

Yes. We try to answer all emailed questions, but this can sometimes take 2-3 weeks.  However, we do not read any applications or documents sent by email.  Please note that emails asking questions that are clearly answered on the website will not receive a reply.

Can I apply online?

No.  All applications must be sent to the PO Box address.  Online applications will not be accepted.

We are concerned about postal strikes affecting our application - can I send my application by registered post or courier?

No - couriers do not deliver to PO Box addresses, and we cannot guarantee being able to sign for individual items.  To avoid any postal delays, please send applications well before the deadline.

Do you prefer applications to arrive around the deadline dates?

No - wherever possible please send in applications several weeks before the deadline.  We then have plenty of time to request any additional information we might need.  So many applications arrive on the deadline date that it is very hard to give every one the consideration it deserves before the Trustees' meeting.

I have sent my application in a day late - please can it still be considered?

Unfortunately, no.  We are strict with the cut-off point for applications - 1st June or 1st November.   We feel that the majority of charities make the effort to meet the deadline, and advise everyone to send applications in well before these deadlines to ensure they can be considered for the appropriate meeting.

Can you confirm that you have received my application?

No as this would take up too much of the administrator's limited time.

When will I know if we have been successful?

We post a list of successful charities on the website - see 'Recent Awards' - as soon as possible after the Trustees' meeting.  An official letter, with a cheque, will be sent out within the next few weeks.  All unsuccessful applicants will also be contacted, but this can take several weeks.  Patience from charities is appreciated with this.

Our charity's accounts are available online - can we give details of how to access these with our application rather than sending a hard copy?

No.  Please send a hard copy.

Types of Grants

Can we apply for core funding?

Yes, but we do prefer to fund specific projects.  If you do want to apply for core funding, please also include details of projects that your organisation undertakes so that we can have a complete picture of your work.

How big a grant can we apply for?

Grants are usually between £1000 and £5000, depending on the range of applications that are received for consideration at each meeting.  Charities that have not been funded before, and are not know by the trustees, are more likely to receive smaller grants.  The exception is medical research, where larger grants are sometimes awarded.

Can we apply for a two- or three-year grant?

No, unless you are a medical research charity.  All other charities receive a grant for only one year.

Successful Applicants

Would you like to receive our charity's newsletter or annual report?

No thank you.  We simply do not have the time to do justice to the newsletters and annual reports we receive, so would rather than resources were not used unnecessarily.

Can we download an evaluation form?

Yes - see 'How to Apply - Monitoring'.  This can then be either posted or emailed to the Trust.

Would you like to visit our charity or project?

We are always pleased to be invited to visit projects, although our limited resources means that we can attend only occasionally.  Please email any details of invitations or events that you would like someone to attend, and we will do our best to support your work.
